2021 Call for Proposals is Open

The 2021 Open Education Conference is inviting proposals for live and pre-recorded virtual sessions to be held on October 18-22, 2021. Proposals are enthusiastically welcomed from everyone with an interest in sharing about open education, especially students. The conference program seeks to center action for equity and inclusion in open education through the theme “Making Open for All.”

Proposals are due by June 21st, 2021 at 11:59pm PDT. Submissions are accepted through EasyChair, and the online Call for Proposals outlines the full details.

Virtual Session Types

The conference will be conducted entirely as a virtual event. Live sessions will be held live at a specific time in the program. Pre-recorded types will be submitted in advance and available to browse “on demand” throughout the event, in addition to being scheduled for a live viewing.  The session types are:

  • 10 min Lightning Talk (pre-recorded video with live viewing)

  • 25 min Presentation (pre-recorded video with live viewing)

  • 40 min Presentation (live presentation that will be recorded)

  • 40 min Discussion (live interactive session that will not be recorded)

  • 55 min Panel (live panel discussion that will be recorded)

  • Open Space (propose your own session type)

Program Topics

The conference program will focus on ten topics derived from data on what community members most want to learn at the conference. The topics are intended to apply across various contexts, stakeholders, and practices, spanning higher education, K-12, and international collaboration. Since many topics overlap, proposals may list up to three relevant topics. The ten topics are:

  • Open Education 101: The Basics and How to Get Started

  • The Meaning of “All”: Examinations of Equity, Anti-Racism, Indigenization, Decolonization, and Social Justice

  • Ethical Education: Issues of Agency, Labor, Privacy, and Consent

  • Designing for Inclusion and Accessibility: How to Build and Create for All

  • Exchanging Knowledge Across Borders: Open Education Around the World

  • Teaching and Learning Through Open: Open Pedagogy and Practices

  • Open Education in K-12: Approaches in Primary and Secondary Education

  • Understanding Open: Sharing Case Studies and Contributing to the Body of Literature

  • Building and Sustaining a Culture of Open: Strategies, Policies, Best Practices, and Advocacy

  • The Joy of Open: Celebrating Community, Care, and Collaboration

Proposal selection will be conducted through a community-driven process, based on relevance of topic, value to attendees, quality of the proposal, and diversity considerations. Read the full Call for Proposals for complete details, including submission policies, criteria, guidelines, and requirements.
