What: 2024 Open Education Conference (#OpenEd24)

Where: Online and in Providence, RI, United States

When: October 8-10, 2024

The Open Education Conference is an annual convening for sharing and learning about open educational resources, open pedagogy, and open education initiatives. Each year, it draws more than a thousand educators, librarians, students, and other professionals to exchange the latest ideas, best practices, and research in the growing open education field. Led by a community-elected board of directors, the conference envisions open education as a catalyst for educational equity, change, and transformation.

Building on the conference’s first sixteen years as an in-person event and the last four of convening virtually, OpenEd24 will support the best of both formats, offering ways for attendees to connect and share meaningful experiences regardless of how they join. The in-person venue will be the Omni Providence in charming downtown Providence, which is known for its outstanding restaurants, vibrant performing arts scene, and beautiful riverwalk—especially in the fall. Virtual attendance will continue to be the high quality, community-driven experience that attendees have come to expect, making the event accessible to a much wider audience.

The decision to move to a hybrid format for 2024 was informed by a year-long community consultation process, which brought in hundreds of suggestions and great ideas. These conversations surfaced a strong demand for the unique benefits of in-person convenings, while showing equally strong support for the more accessible and inclusive space that virtual events provide. The barriers and environmental impact associated with in-person convening is something that all modern events will need to grapple with, and the conference is committed to approaching this we as we do all things: through community.

More details about the 2024 conference will be released in the new year. In the meantime, please complete the OpenEd24 Interest Form to ensure you are the first to know when registration opens, since space for in-person attendance will be limited. Community members interested in getting involved in the organizing process are also welcome to complete the Volunteer Interest Form.
