TUESDAY, October 8

Joy Shoemate

Joy Shoemate is the Director of Online Education at College of the Canyons where she supports instructors’ successful integration of technology into teaching and learning to promote student success, persistence, and completion in distance education courses. She oversees the development and adoption of OER, employing a team of current and former community college students that support faculty with everything from search and attributions, to textbook creation.

Joy co-developed and co-facilitates the Open for Antiracism (OFAR) course, in which faculty participants leverage open education to make their courses culturally responsive and antiracist.

Joy previously served on the Executive Council of CCCOER and currently serves on the board of the Drivers of Educational Technology California Higher Education (DET/CHE). She facilitates courses for the Online Network of Educators (@ONE), the leading professional development organization for the California Community College system.

James Glapa-Grossklag

James Glapa-Grossklag is Dean, Educational Technology, Learning Resources, and Distance Learning at College of the Canyons (CA). He has been deeply involved in Open Education since 2008. He serves as Technical Assistance Provider for the California Community Colleges Zero Textbook Cost Degree Program, the largest-ever public investment in OER. He co-leads the Open for Antiracism Program, supporting faculty to leverage OER and Open Pedagogy to make their teaching antiracist. He is OER Fellow for the Michelson 20MM Foundation and a faculty member in the AAC&U Institute on OER.

James was formerly Board President of Open Education Global and the Community College Consortium for OER. Additionally, he served as a trainer on OER for the US Department of State in the Middle East and North Africa, was Innovation Scholar in Residence at RMIT University in Australia, and was Global OER Ambassador for the International Council for Open and Distance Education.

WEDNESDAY, October 9

Richard Baraniuk

A pioneer in open education, Dr. Richard G. Baraniuk is professor of electrical and computer engineering at Rice University and founder and director of OpenStax. He launched Connexions in 1999 as a platform for open knowledge sharing, which evolved into OpenStax, the world’s largest OER publisher with more than 70 digital textbooks used by 7 million college and high school students this school year. He also leads SafeInsights, the US National Science Foundation’s national infrastructure for education research. Baraniuk has been active in AI theory research and education applications for 15 years, and is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the US National Academy of Inventors, AAAS, and IEEE. He has received numerous research and education awards, including the IEEE James H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal and the Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education.

Student Keynote Panel

The final keynote will feature a panel of students from across the northeast region. The discussion will focus on the topic “Why Do We Need Open Education in this Moment?” building on the theme It’s About Time. Students will discuss the realities of being a student in the current moment, their hopes for the future, and how open education advocates can put students at the center of their work.
